about

Baba Yaga is a fairy tale witch from the Russian/Slavic cultures.
In 1870 composer Modest Mussorgsky included a scene in his Pictures At An Exhibition based on a picture by Victor Hartmann - The Hut On Hen's Legs (Baba Yaga).

In 1971 Emerson, Lake and Palmer did a progressive rock release of Pictures At An Exhibition and The Hut of Baba Yaga and The Curse of Baba Yaga was brought to my attention.

Over lunch, a discussion of the names of Russian restaurants, the most interesting being "Vodka Borscht & Tears", conjured up the working title "Baba Yaga's Tears" upon which I begin thinking ...

The resulting Baba Yaga Suite is comprised of three pieces:
(i) Forest - a piano instrumental with classical influences that moves through the forest approaching Baba Yaga's hut

(ii) Tears - a rock song with lyrics about Baba Yaga, her hut, her tears (as imaged by me) and her victims

(iii) Flight - a progressive rock influenced instrumental depicting a victim running from Baba Yaga in her mortar and pestle.
