Bell Curve

from Street Lights by Ian Rutherford

/

about

This is my reading and instrumentation of a poem by my sister Wendy Steel. Written at a time when we were thinking about our parents - a lot!

The lyrics make a shape like a sideways bell curve, hence the title. My influence was a Tim Minchin style beat poem.

lyrics

Sleeping a lot,
limited mobility, few possessions,
Cared for by others, much to learn,
Growing, changing, learning language,
expanding horizons, meeting others,
making friends, learning skills, dreaming,
loving, filling cupboards, claiming spaces,
climbing the ladder, making vows, honeymooning,
going places, adding faces, tying laces, wiping traces,
paying for braces, packing cases, covering bases,
picking flowers, cutting hours, scaling back powers,
choosing leisure, seeking pleasure, time to measure
culling things, folding wings, aging stings.
Stories to tell, saying farewell, the knell
of the bell. Much that’s learnt,
fewer possessions, cared for
by others, limited mobility
Sleeping a lot.
