Shadow on the mountain
© Ian Rutherford 2014
A song about tribalism and xenophobia, with a bit of Dr Seuss
Verse 1
The folks across the valley are really not like us
Their hair is light, their eyes are blue
Their hats are bright, their clothing too
They worship snakes and shun the light
They are wrong and we are right
Verse 2
The people from the mountain are a strange and fearful lot
Their words are harsh, their hats are green
Small children there are never seen
They eat the beasts that we all ride
They are the ones we can't abide
Chorus
There's a shadow on the mountain, evil is around
A shadow on the mountain, uncertainty abounds
Panic at the prospect of things we do not know
Unfamiliar faces, their customs and their clothes
Verse 3
The people from the sacred lake have demons on their side
They swim at night, beneath the moon
They want our land, they'll take it soon
They eat our fish, from our lake
Their way is wrong, it's their mistake
Verse 4
The people on the leaky boat are just the same as us
They eat and breathe and laugh and cry
They cut and bleed and drown and die
They eat and breathe and laugh and cry
They cut and bleed and drown and die
Speak a different language and wear different clothes
The people on the leaky boat are just the same as us
Chorus
There's a shadow on the mountain, change is coming soon
A shadow on the mountain, a growing sense of doom
People from another land, arriving on our shores
Violating customs, contravening laws
Verse 5
The people on the leaky boat are just the same as us
They eat and breathe and laugh and cry
They cut and bleed and drown and die
They eat and breathe and laugh and cry
They cut and bleed and drown and die
Chorus (repeats)
There's a shadow on the mountain, it's just a passing cloud
A shadow not an omen, don't be sucked in by the crowd
People seeking refuge, arriving on our shores
People just like you and me, fleeing evil laws

Verse 1
Do you ever really know a person?... I don't think so
Years together count for nothing... Sometimes it's true
Guilty of neglect or malice?... Or maybe both
Verse 2
Missed the point... The essence of the person
fundamental things... What makes them tick
Little things that mean so much... Just silly toys
Verse 3
Rolling Stones and Leon Russell… Found on eBay
Bargain prices... That's not the point
Jethro Tull and Mad dogs there... But not the same
Chorus
Push the needle... to the red line
Cross boundary... go too far
Test the limits... care too little
Drop your standards... below the belt
You sold my vinyl... That makes it final
Treasured memories... for cents a piece
You sold my vinyl... My feelings primal
Traded my youth... Forgive yourself

Summer Sun
© Ian Rutherford 2014
Verses
Summer sun beats on my head
A bead of sweat slides across my brow
Down my cheek into my mouth
We kiss and the saltiness is shared
Your back is warm and slippery
Breath held as cool lotion drips
Work on shoulders, neck then ears
We kiss and the oiliness is shared
The sun is hot but the water's cool
Jumping, laughing in the waves
Water dripping from our hair
We kiss and the saltiness is shared
The summer sun conjures up those days
Childhood fun, castles on the beach
Teenage love, trim and tanned
We kiss and the memories are shared
Chorus
Summer sun, reminds me of you
On the beach, strolling hand in hand
At the water's edge, Dashing from the waves
In the dunes, a blanket on the sand
These are the days of our youth
These are the days of our youth

Grumpy old man
Look me in the eye
Tell me if it’s true
Do I irritate you?
Grumpy old man
Tell it to my face
Give it to me straight
Do I deserve this fate
Grumpy old man
What’s wrong with you
Give me the straight dope
Have you lost all hope
Grumpy old man
It doesn’t seem right
I’m looking at you
But am I looking at me
Chorus
Once you were a young man
Full of love to share
Family, friends, workmates
to care
Now you are a sad man
Full of hate and bile
As you tried to hurt me
You smile

SDF Blues
I woke up this morning
Couldn’t believe the news
I said, I woke up the morning
And I couldn't believe the news
Process leads, Cross Stream Review
Project plan is overdue
Oh yeah, I got the blues
I got those SDF blues
Your dog will die, the wife says bye
Mortgage payments way too high
Yeah I got the blues
I got those SDF blues
I walked in to the QV
Coffee lines are long
I said in walked to the QV
And those coffee lines are long
Delivery times are way to short
Schedules going wrong
Oh yeah, I got the blues
I got those SDF blues
Your dog will die, the wife says bye
Mortgage payments way too high
Yeah I got the blues
I got the those SDF blues
An argument of architects
A plethora of PAs
We got an argument of architects
And plethora of PAs
RTMs and BRDs
Billing accounts and product fees
Oh yeah, I got the blues
I got those SDF blues
Your dog will die, the wife says bye
Mortgage payments way too high
Yeah I got the blues
I got the those SDF blues
Skipped my lunch, just had a snack
Meetings running back to back
I said, skipped my lunch, just had a snack
Meetings running back to back
DFEs have changed their name
IE 8 is still the same
Oh yeah, I got the blues
I got those SDF blues
Your dog will die, the wife says bye
Mortgage payments way too high
Yeah I got the blues
I got the those SDF blues
Mary's setting deadlines
Megan's changing scope
Process maps and Salesforce Apps
Corey's dashed off to the gym
I got the blues
I got those SDF blues
SDF and SDA
It's acronyms all the way
Yeah SDF and SDA
Acronyms all the way
Learn the SDFC ABCD
Watch that traceability
Oh yeah, I got the blues
I got those SDF blues
Your dog will die, the wife says bye
Mortgage payments way too high
Yeah I got the blues
I got the those SDF bluesOh yeah .....
I got those SDF,
I got those SDF,
I got those SDF

Ruthers by Others - The songs of Ian Rutherford as sung by other artists.
This album is a collection of my songs sung by others. Why? Clearly you've not heard me sing - lucky you! But seriously, I'm thrilled to be able to get my music performed so well and it's been an amazing experience to produce this.
As a keen musician but non-singer I never really "wrote songs" as such but finally came to the craft at the age of 50 when I wrote my first real one. We recorded it as Mu-Theory
mutheory.bandcamp.com/track/ten-a-penny - many thanks to my good mate, fellow band and songwriter Tony Brewin for getting that one over the line. That song kick-started this process when I realised I could write music to lyrics.
The performers on this album are credited track by track but it is interesting to note that I've never met them and I don't believe they've met each other, all performances were coordinated via the internet and produced in my home studio. Collectively I know them as the "Plus Five" band and they span the globe covering USA, Italy, Israel, Egypt, Sweden, New Zealand - and Australia.
All vocals, drums, bass & guitars performed by the Plus Five band with keyboards and various synth parts performed by Ian Rutherford.
The songs on the album were written over about a two year period from 2012-2014 and recorded between June & September 2014.
