We're All Mad Here

from We're All Mad Here by Ian Rutherford

lyrics

How comical these footmen are!
A frog and a fish, I do declare!
If this is where the Duchess lives
I wonder, should I go in there?
Did someone throw
That plate at his nose?

It’s hot in the kitchen
with pepper and rage
as the cook once more
goes on the rampage

while her anger’s difficult
to assuage
I’m a Cheshire Cat
and I don’t engage

The baby howls
in the Duchess’s arms
and I’m sure that Alice
feels alarmed

I don’t feel the pressure
because I’m a Cheshire
and little pepper
won’t do any harm.

If I’m not mistaken
More care should be taken
Not to hurt the baby
Cook seems really vicious
Hurling pots and dishes
Everyone is crazy.
I think she just said
“Off with her head!”

Fading in and fading out
What was a nose
is now a snout
Fading out and fading in
the last thing to go
will be my grin

The baby’s turned into a pig
and now I’m wondering
where to go
If I should ask
the Cheshire Cat
I wonder would he know?

Whichever way you go
We’re all mad here, you know
Off to the Hatter
or to the March Hare
either way
you should be aware
it’s absolutely clear
we’re all mad here.
